This weekend I’m speaking in front of big church (that’s what I call the stuff the adults do at Nativity) after Mass. I’m a little nervous, I will be talking about Meshach, Shadarach and Abendego and how they stood up against King Nebuchadnezzar… apparently there are a lot of hard names and words to pronounce in this message, but in the end I should do fine.
I was meeting up with my buddy Jason (youth pastor at Severn’s Heritage Community Church) this morning and we were talking about how unfamiliar so many of us are with the Old Testament. When it comes to reading the bible we sometimes start out in Genesis and get lost or we go right to the Gospels. If you pick up the Old Testament there are surprisingly some crazy; yet, awesome stories. They seem pretty wild, but if you think about what’s really going on you can find how much the stories parallel our lives today.
I think we tend to look back at history and just say, “That’s funny that people did that, they just didn’t know.” Meaning, because we are so “advanced” today we somehow figured out life and that people back then just didn’t know the “truth”. But, I don’t know if that’s really true, I think the world has changed in a technological fashion, but our fears, feelings, values, etc. are pretty much the same, it just looks a little different. The world will constantly change around us but we need to be looking to God, allowing Him to work through us and in us so that we can continue to build His kingdom. I think when we work on the values, our fears, feelings, essentially our heart and work on giving that to God, then we’ll discover what’s life all about.
