A new day begins, you’ve got expectations, you blink, the day is over and you wonder, “What did I accomplish?” We all have days like that, but what should we do when those days become weeks and months?
It’s an overwhelming feeling to have your ministry stuck in a rut. If not addressed it can leave you feeling helpless and even burned out. If your ministry is stuck on a path that leads nowhere it means it’s time to:
TAKE A STEP BACK AND RECALIBRATE
When most of us hear that advice we tend to push back and say, “But, I don’t have the time!” And that’s because taking a step back can feel like a setback.
No one likes falling behind; however, if something doesn’t change the feeling (and the reality of the situation) will continue to escalate. To stop the cycle start out by:
SETTING A DATE ON THE CALENDAR TO REFOCUS
This is important especially if you are busy. Don’t just decide to do it last minute, look at your calendar and decide one day in the next week that you’ll take a look at:
What’s Working and What’s Broken
Protect that date, make it sacred and don’t deviate. There will be temptations to reschedule but this is one of the most important steps you can take.
RALLYING THE TEAM TOGETHER
Anytime you try to do ministry on your own you end up burned out. And that’s because ministry is a community effort. No matter how great your ideas you need people:
- Sharing ideas that could take your ministry up a level.
- Holding you accountable to your goals.
- Giving you the support you need to overcome obstacles.
If you have a core team get them together for an offsite where you can share some of your frustrations, refocus on the vision and set some bold audacious goals.
If you don’t have a core team set a goal of finding 3-5 people who can speak into your life. They don’t have to be doers, just people who are passionate about the vision. For more on building a core team read HERE.
LOOKING AT THE WHY AND UNDERSTAND THE WHAT SO YOU KNOW HOW
One of the reasons we get stuck in a rut is because we put the wrong things on our plate or too many good things. To know what goes on your plate you need to:
- Revisit The Why. This comes from revisiting your purpose and answering the question, “Why do we exist?”
- Understand The What. In other words, what are you hoping to accomplish? What is your idea of success and how will you know when you get there?
As you answer those questions you’ll begin to put together a clear picture of what needs to be done. You’ll begin to recognize the tools and resources needed. Instead of planning a random event or buying expensive content you’ll be able to build a ministry that’s efficient and effective.
When you feel like your ministry isn’t working it’s time to hit the pause and take a look at the bigger picture. It’ll give you a fresh look and sometimes that’s all we need to identify the reasons we’re not moving forward.
