Sicko made me Sicko

I saw Sicko the new Michael Moore film tonight. It was like most Michael Moore films in where I feel powerful points were made; however, I found myself not a fan of Michael. Now, I’m not going to harp on why I didn’t like Michael Moore there are plenty of websites out there that will do that. What I do want to talk about in regards to that movie is how Michael made the point that we are such a “me” nation and we should be more of a “we” nation.
A few weeks ago on the feast of Corpus Christi Father Abel spoke about the importance of our body and urged the congregation to take our nation’s health care seriously and encouraged us to make our politicians take us seriously. He talked about our health as a faith issue. It’s one body and God wants us to take care of it, it’s on loan to us and like everything else God gives us we are responsible for taking care of ourselves to the highest level. But when it comes to health care it isn’t just about us but also about one another. We aren’t just responsible for our own bodies but others as well.
Before the movie we saw some of that new reality show with Shaq where he helps fat kids lose weight. It’s hard to believe that we live in such a health obsessed world; however, are obese, sick, tired and overworked. Are we really working to make this world a better place if so why does it seem as if the quality of society and life is failing before us. Why are we not taking care of ourselves in a positive way and others in a loving way?
Even though Sicko was filled with some humor I could have done with out it still put a lot into perspective for me. I think it did a lot to expose our double standards and our selfishness as a people. And it made me wish I hadn’t eaten Chinese before the movie.
