It constantly felt like a competition. People would ask, “Did you hear the great things the church down the road is doing?” I felt threatened. I didn’t want to praise them too much for fear people would leave me for them. I was very insecure.
If you always look at the church down the road as competition you’ll limit your youth ministry’s growth. To eliminate the insecurity you have to look at what other churches can offer. Instead of facing off with them work with them because you’ll start to:
You are limited in what you know. When you partner and network with other churches you open yourself up to many new resources. To gain those new ideas and resources just start sharing what you do. Take what you like and try it out in your program.
On top of gaining new ideas, you’ll learn how to avoid certain road blocks and struggles. This is especially important if you are new and they’ve been around for a while. They will be able to help you avoid mistakes that could set you back. Seek their wisdom.
Being vulnerable with other youth ministers can be a challenge. You might want them to think you have everything together. The reality is you need their experience. Many of them have experienced what you are experiencing. They can:
Ministry is not meant to be done on your own. You need other youth ministers praying for you and cheering you on. It will only make you stronger.
For one church to take on all the problems, and issues facing your community would be a huge challenge. Together you can tackle some of the issues by sharing resources and opportunities.
The more you collaborate the more unity you show. The more unity you show, the stronger the church becomes.
Don’t look at the youth ministry down the street as competition. Look at them as your brothers and sisters fighting in the trenches. Reach out to them, do life with them and continue to pray for them. Build your network so that you can build up the church body.
