After 4 hours of hiking to the top of Old Rag Mountain in the Shenandoah Valley, we sat, ate and just took in God’s creation. The moment was awesome, we had just gotten done doing a reflection on 1 Kings 19:11-13 and you could hear God’s whisper through the valley. After hanging at the summit for about an hour we decided to trek back down the backside, and that trek quickly became a sprint as the sky began to darken, a thunderstorm was on the horizon.
Yesterday was by far one of my favorite days as a youth minister. It’s not the first time I’ve done a trip with students, it’s not the first time I’ve hike Old Rag Mountain with them, but it was just a day where the students worked hard together and really took in what God had in store for them. It was hot and humid, which meant stinky teenagers, but when the rain hit, all the smell and stench was washed away. During the ride home students shared war stories and laughed about moments that will stay with them forever.
The reason yesterday was big and definitely one of my top moments is because it marked an overcoming an obstacle for me. An event was planned, executed and it totally connected with what we are doing as a church. With that said we continue to build momentum into a season that is known as a momentum killer.
I personally want to thank all the adults who lead the trip, the high school students who cheered on the middle school students and everyone who made the hike possible. My challenge to anyone reading this is to go out, find God in the whispers of His Creation, enjoy being surrounded by nothing but His Glory.
