Last night I was watching CSI: New York and it was a repeat but it dealt with the subject of sex trafficking, which is basically a form of modern day slavery. Even though men, women and children can all be victims it mainly focuses on women and girls which is upsetting for me considering I have 4 sisters. There apparently is (at least in my own opinion) more of an awareness on the subject, but I think denial is our biggest enemy, considering the fact that we abolished slavery in this country over a hundred years ago… or did we?
Three summers ago we took students out to the Student Leadership Conference in Saddleback and Zach Hunter founder of
Loose Change to Loosen Chains spoke about his God given mission to fight world wide slavery.
The whole idea of this is crazy, but we have to remember that evil exists. The thief’s greatest trick is to pretend that he doesn’t exist; therefore, believing in the devil can sometimes seem crazy.
I’m looking forward to this Advent because I know as a church we are going to battle some of these world wide problems that we tend to over look, even our mission trip in Nigeria is great because it allows us to shine a light on what is happening over there. Take it for granted, denial, whatever you call it, if we don’t focus on loving God and our neighbor darkness can overtake our hearts and lives.
