Episode 070 – Giving Teens the Pen: Forming Young Leaders with Marisally Santiago

Written by Christopher Wesley | Sep 15, 2026, 12:44:15 PM

In this episode of The Church Podcast, Christopher sits down with Marisally Santiago, Director of the Office of Ministry with Youth (OMY) for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Marisally shares her winding path into ministry — from growing up in a Puerto Rican family in Central Florida, to a 20-year career in graphic design (including hand-painting signage at Walt Disney World), to stepping into full-time diocesan leadership in the middle of the pandemic. She and Christopher have worked together for over five years, and this conversation traces how her creative background and her own formation as a teenager in Pastoral Juvenil shaped the ministry she leads today.

Together, Christopher and Marisally explore the "blank canvas" she walked into in Philadelphia, the YCOPI program she built on an accompaniment and protagonism model, and what it actually takes to hold cultural particularity and parish-wide unity in balance rather than treating them as an either/or.

This conversation is a grounded, hope-filled look at what happens when dioceses give young people real ownership — not just a seat at the table, but the pen to help draw the picture.

In This Episode

  • Marisally's journey from Puerto Rico to Central Florida to North Jersey, and how she moved from volunteer to full-time diocesan ministry
  • Why she calls walking into the Philadelphia role a "blank canvas," and how Archbishop Pérez's vision for young people drew her to the position
  • What YCOPI is: an accompaniment and protagonism model rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, built alongside Good Faith's Next Level program in New Jersey
  • How YCOPI shifts adults from "driver" to "passenger" while teens take ownership of a real mission in their parish
  • Stories of teens finding their voice — from PB&J outreach to teen-led adoration nights to parishes suddenly noticing how many teens they actually have
  • Lessons from her years in Pastoral Juvenil Hispana in the Archdiocese of Newark on holding cultural particularity and parish-wide unity in tension rather than choosing between them
  • How 20 years as a graphic designer — including her time designing wayfinding systems for Walt Disney World — shapes how she asks "why," solves problems creatively, and manages ministry projects today
  • Her advice for ministers new to diocesan work: take it slow, listen to the people nobody else is listening to, and never do it alone
