I had no clue what I was doing when I first started in ministry. To tell you the truth there are still times when I struggle to figure it out. Having someone there more experienced and looking in from the outside has helped me greatly.
Youth ministry offers a variety of twists and turns. To navigate the journey alone is never wise. Surrounding yourself with the right people is key to growing stronger and more efficient. While your volunteers and coworkers can help you do that, sometimes you:
NEED COACHING
What type of coach do you need? It really depends on where you feel you need the most improvement. Over my tenure I’ve had several different people speak into my life, here are a few that have made an impact:
SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR
Don’t assume that because you work for a church that your faith will always remain strong. It’s easy to take it for granted and let it slide.
Go through your dioceses or look at a local university that offers spiritual counseling or direction. Find someone that will give you exercises to sharpen your mind and heart. Look for someone who is going to help you get fed by God and find the boundaries between work and worship.
PROFESSIONAL COACH
Youth ministry is a calling; however, it’s also a job. It’s a profession that demands excellence, and efficiency. As a youth minister you need to know how to:
- Manage people
- Create a budget
- Develop a strategic plan
- Build a communication strategy
- Time management
While there are several resources available, a professional coach will assist in helping you implement them. Professional coaching can be expensive, so if you find someone in your church that has a background in it ask them to give you a free meetings.
It might seem like overkill to have a professional coach; however, the more professional you approach student ministry the more capacity you will have to reach more students.
YOUTH MINISTRY MENTOR
Sometimes you need someone who just understands the burden of youth ministry. Maybe it’s conflict with the pastor or being reamed out by a parent. Maybe you are wondering if it ever gets better.
If you can find an experienced youth minister who’s willing to listen and speak into your life take advantage of it. Just make sure they are familiar with your denomination or church dynamics (i.e. large congregation). Allow them to give you insight from the trenches.
