Why Creativity Lacks In Your Ministry And This Title

I could never be an artist.  Well, I could but I would starve to death and that wouldn’t be cool.  I do love to write, but like most writers I find myself in bouts of writer’s block.  I also notice periods where my writing has been horrible, which is a little embarrassing.  To be creative day in and day out is difficult.
As youth workers there’s the pressure to be constantly creative because we are always looking to engage students, inspire ministers and win over parents.  So, how do we stay creative?  It’s by making sure your life is set-up for creativity.  Maybe you are doing too much of one thing and not enough of the other, which in turn is limiting the creative juices from flowing.  Here are a few areas to review:

  1. Read More Watch Less – If you aren’t reading you aren’t learning.  I love T.V. and movies but it takes away the imagination.  It limits your mind from creating a scene and developing characters.  Reading a book, especially fiction stimulates your mind to think outside the box.
  2. Play More Work Less – I’m not saying you should work less than 40 hours, but then again there aren’t many youth workers who work less than 50 hours.  We need to get out and play.  We need to build stories in our lives, even if it’s just going for a walk.  How can you share an adventure if you are too busy to go on one?
  3. Sleep More Eat Less – You don’t sleep you don’t dream.  You eat too much it’ll slow you down.  Lack of sleep and overeating can lead to stress and frustration from an unhealthy life style.  If you get a good night’s rest and eat a well balanced meal you give yourself the fuel to think and go above and beyond.

Creativity isn’t just for artists and musicians, it’s something we can all embrace.  While some of us are more creative than others we need to be sure we reach our full potential by removing the obstacles that stand in our way.

What helps your creativity flourish?
