What A Leader Needs To Give Their Team

In Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1963 I Have A Dream Speech he gave a nation of men and women a vision of what could happen. Great leaders are people who can give others what they need to succeed.

As a youth minister you are a leader. Each week you ask men and women to help you raise up disciples of Christ. They are looking to you to show them how youth ministry is done.  They need you to show them how to lead themselves.  To do this help them embrace the vision and set them up for success.  To make sure this happens you need to:

GIVE THEM:

  • Confidence: On top of serving teenagers, sharing your faith can be intimidating. What you need to show your leaders is that they are qualified. To do this give them authority and ownership and it will build their confidence.
  • Tools For Success: You need to make sure your leaders have the resources that are going to help them grow. Youth ministry is an ever changing field and your leaders need to keep up. Connect them with the tools you are using.
  • Accountability: You know it’s not healthy for anyone to be a Lone Ranger. Make sure you give your leaders a sense of community by creating opportunities of collaboration and sharing. This will only make your leaders stronger.
  • Faith: You need to make sure you give your team resources, opportunities and relationships that will help them grow as disciples. Plug them into their own small group and make sure they are engaging in spiritual habits. If they feel connected to God they’ll grow from volunteers into leaders themselves.

As a leader you are trying to grow other leaders. Your ministry is not just to teenagers but the adults who serve alongside of you. Give them what they need to lead successfully.

What else can you give your team to help them lead?
