Timing Is Everything

This past Saturday my family went to Hershey Park.  It was a little bit of a risk because there was a huge rain storm making it’s way across the country.  For most of the day there was not a single drop; however, towards late afternoon the sky grew dark.  We debated about getting on one more ride and in the end we opted for the car.  Seat belts on, car started and rain poured.  Our timing was perfect.

Timing is everything when it comes to youth ministry.  It’s not just what you do, but when you do it that’s just as important.  Whether it’s implementing a new program, presenting a new idea or asking for something big, you need to know if your timing is right.  While everything new or different will have some push back to deliver it with the right timing you need to:

• Prepare Yourself: Your timing might be off because you are not fully prepared and informed.  Do not walk into a meeting with someone unless you feel like you have all the facts.  Know your audience and your information so that you are ready to handle any questions.

• Let It Marinate: If you have an idea that’s exciting that needs to be shared right away, DON’T. Let it sit and settle so that you can take away any overpowering and overwhelming emotions that might upset your audience.  Your timing can be thrown off if your idea comes on too strong.

• Bounce It Off Others: Get some insight from people you trust.  Ask them, “Does this make sense?” and “Am I being clear?” You want to make sure you can bring people with you, so if your most trusted allies have push back you may want to reconsider.  Allow them to share with you their honest insight on the best time to do your ask or present your idea.

• Trust In God: Timing is never really on your terms.  If you have an incredible idea and you present it to a crowd don’t be surprised by push back.  All it means is that they are not ready or you need to go back to the drawing board on how to implement it.  It’s also a way of God saying, “I’ve got something better.”  Trust that He does, because it’s always worth it.

Get the timing right and you’ll always move forward.  Granted you will still face resistance; however, God will show you how to navigate through it.  If you are prepared and well equipped in the end your timing will appear seamless.
