It’s easy for me as a youth minister to fall into the trap of, “I need more.” If I had more money, volunteers, time, etc. I could run a more successful youth ministry. There are times when you and I want more; however, all we need is what God has given us. I was reminded of this when Word Films asked me to review their new movie Break Away (Released April 23rd via Word Films).
It’s the story of Francois an accountant who loses his job and is forced to figure out how to support and care for his family. It’s a situation many of us fear because it acknowledges the fact that you and I are not in control. In the story Francois learns quickly that God has in store for him a different plan and path. He is reminded that when you feel like you are out of choices to use what you have. (Mark 6:30-44)
So, what were my thoughts?
THE BAD: Not the highest quality.
The movie starts of abruptly. There is no backstory to Francois’s character except that he was successful at some point in his life. There is a sense that he is a good guy; however, appears unemotional at first. I wasn’t sure if it was the acting or the lack of character development. While I do not mind predictable story lines, this one could have been shorten significantly. I’m not going to harp too much on the acting because the film was made on a tight budget, let’s just say it could have been better.
THE GOOD: Positive film filled with hope.
While the storyline was predictable I liked how it reminded me not to lose hope in times of need. Granted the script was filled with cliches; however, they were more than welcomed. As a father I loved the optimism and family friendliness of the film. I could definitely see it as a conversation starter on how to approach difficult situations in life. While the dialogue could use some work there were moments where I was drawn into the moment and reflected on how I would act in that situation.
OVERALL: Wait for it on Netflix.
Again, the strengths of the film is that is a positive story that addresses a real concern that many of us have. It’s got a realistic message that reminds us to stay positive, lean on one another and trust in the Lord when you hit times of uncertainty. While I enjoyed the overall message I wish that the crew didn’t try to jam everything into 2 hours. If you see it on Netflix and want to watch something positive with the little ones, feel free to give it a viewing.
