Persistence, Consistence and Authenticity

Parents seem a little happier, kids a little gloomier… it must mean school starts tomorrow. I’m excited, I’m looking forward to it. I’ve seen a lot of students walking around telling them about the Uprising kickoff, telling them to join a small group, inviting them to be a part of the weekends and it seems they are taking it seriously. I know when a student tells me that they are going to check out Upward Ministries at Nativity because they are interested, but it gets difficult because somewhere during the week something (homework, family, sports, television, friends, etc) else presents itself. That’s why it’s important to consistently present an invitation, to be persistent and to be genuine.
For me it’s all about being the first two, I need to be consistently out in the hall, pavilion, patio and cafe inviting students to check out our ministry, I need to connect with the “regular” Mass attendees and continue to invite them even if they say “I don’t know” the first couple of times. I hope I come off authentic, I really do care about the students, I’m not trying to sell them anything, just trying to let them know that I’m here for them and God’s here for them. If we can be consistent, persistent and authentic in any ministry, I think we can create a culture where people look forward to the relationships they will build (with God and others) here at Nativity.
