Misplaced Mile Markers

I’ve been thinking about mile markers the last couple of days, mainly because on my run this past Sunday the mile markers were off. It took me 14 minutes to run the 1st mile, 3 minutes to run the 2nd and 4minutes to run the 3rd mile, after that I just didn’t pay much attention to what the race committee had put out. Instead I listened to my body and found a pace that felt comfortable to me. Even though I made good time it was frustrating and a little scary not to have those mile markers. Without them I had no sense of how fast I was moving and how hard I needed to push to keep my goal pace (somewhere around 7 1/2 minute/mile).
The same happens to us in ministry, if we don’t set the proper mile markers we have no idea of how we are doing; therefore we risk burnout and not accomplishing our goals. That’s what I’m trying to do right now and it’s really hard in the summer because you don’t have the pace of the week to week program to get you going. Right now on my plate I need to figure out the proper pacing for student program development, series writing, minister recruitment and training. Tomorrow morning I have a meeting with some leaders who can hopefully help me out with this at this point I just need to keep trusting God.
