How To Develop Routine

Written by Christopher Wesley | Apr 20, 2015 7:30:21 AM

I haven’t been running for a while.  I had a bad muscle pull in my lower back.  It kept me from doing something I loved.  Finally this past week I’ve been able to get back into routine and it stinks.

Some of us like structure and others of us hate it, but we all need it.  You need routine in your ministry because it keeps you focused.  To develop a productive routine that you could actually enjoy is challenging, but it’s possible as long as you:

WRITE IT DOWN

There is power when your words hit paper (or your desktop).  Your goals, schedules and structures need to be shared because it will bring them to life.  Even if they are not perfect get them down so they don’t become an afterthought.

MAKE THEM KNOWN

Track your routine and then share it with others.  You don’t have to announce it to the world.  But, the more you make it public the more accountability you’ll receive.

Give them permission to ask, “How’s it going?” Seeing those people will be a reminder to stay to your routine.  Your accountability partners can give you advice to get back on track if you get distracted.

ALLOW FLEXIBILITY

You need a day where you can cut loose or take a break. While routine can give you some control life will still happen.  Having flexibility allows you to take a step back when your routine is challenged.  To gain flexibility means embracing margin and scheduling rest.

REMEMBER THERE IS PAIN

It’s not always easy to maintain or start a routine.  Some days will be harder than others (Especially if you’ve been knocked off track) and that’s okay.  Embrace the hardships and remember the pain is temporary.

REVISIT THE STRATEGY

If you feel like you are losing your routine it might be time to take a look at the strategy.  A routine that worked when you were in your 20’s might not be realistic in your 30’s.  Look at your limits and be creative with what you have.

Routine isn’t the most attractive concept in the world but it builds discipline.  Discipline will build focus and you’ll find yourself reaching your goals quickly.  Be persistent and remember ministry sometimes take one step at a time.
