How To Continue The Momentum In Your Ministry

We are about one month into a new season and in reality it’s not new anymore.  When we hit this time of the year we begin to get into the groove of doing ministry week in and week out.  There’s a little bit more of a comfort in what needs to be done; however, the newness of the ministry for begins to fade.  It can feel like the ministry is losing momentum.  The temptation is to give up or to try and plan something bigger and better; but, is that really the answer?
While we will always hit busy and slow seasons in ministry, we will always need momentum because it moves us forward.  So, as you are coming off a season full of energy or an event that just blew the roof off it’s important to take these three steps:

  1. Communicate To Your Leaders: Big or small cheer them on and give them a quick recap of the previous season of ministry.  After an event or a kickoff the adrenaline dies down so people need to know they can still do it.  Take some time to communicate with them the path that lies ahead and how important their contribution is to the ministry.
  2. Communicate The Consistency:  The reason so many teens drop off the radar is because they do not know what is next.  I think we buy the lie that successful ministry means topping what we did the previous week, when in reality it’s about consistency.  Teens just want to know that the church will always be there for them.  Now, that’s not to say you can’t take breaks, just make sure your consistent about it.
  3. Set The Pace: Now that your team is on board and your schedule is in place remind yourself that you are in this for the long haul.  Continuing momentum doesn’t mean doing things bigger, better and faster, it means moving forward.  To move forward you just need one step at a time.  Know what lies ahead on your calendar and prepare.

Whether you like it or not, we all it hit seasons where momentum slows down and that’s because it’s natural.  The reason we hit “slumps” in our ministry is because your teens, your ministers and even you will hit periods of competing systems, which will always slow you down.  If you make the communication clear and encouraging you can keep the momentum in your ministry.

How do you sustain momentum after an exciting season?
