After a long day of breakout sessions, inspirational speaking, idea processing, I’m a little tired, but will probably go for a run in the hot Atlanta sun. There is so much to process after a week of staff retreat and one and half days of leadership conference, so I’m going to do my best to listen to what God is telling me.
At the end of the day Andy gave another message, entitled “Becoming a Great Staff”. He started out the session by talking about Matthew 10:32-45 when Jesus tell His disciples that those who want to be great need to serve. The whole message centered around the question, “How can I serve you better?” A great staff is made up of “great” leaders and great leaders are great servants. One point that Andy made that I thought was powerful is in a staff culture (or family) not everyone needs to be equal but we need to submit to one another. And a great way to make a “great” staff is by:
– Do for one when you can’t do for all
– Create a systematic way of serving leaders (more than just a thank you)
– Create and maintain a sustainable pace to serve one another.
– Celebrate and reward greatness when you see it.
– Confront your ego.
Warning Sings of a “not so great” staff
– Competition between departments
– Double standards
– Loyalty lectures (You don’t require loyalty, it’s given to you because you earn it)
In the end in order to be a “great” leader in a “great” staff it would be best to constantly and consistently ask your staff, yourself and God, “What can I do to help?”
