Developing the Next Generation Leader

I was feeling a little overwhelmed recently, I believe it’s due to a number of things, one being the amount of work that I feel needs to be done. In reality, there isn’t any more work than any other year, in fact I’m probably ahead of schedule. I believe there are three things this anxiety can be attributed towards.

  • Doubt in my abilities and God’s
  • The Devil is pressing me to believe that I’m failing
  • Not doing enough staff (minister) development

The first two will be fought with prayer, quiet time and an ability to let God into my life. After reflecting on this summer I probably could have spent more time meeting with the people who are the ministry leaders for students. Don’t get me wrong I communicated with them but it was more project oriented and not enough growth oriented. I believe everyone who serves in the student ministry is a great leader, manager, worker or all three, but if I don’t spend the time developing them, then this ministry will never grow.

Last night I picked up Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley, where he talks about five attributes of a leader: Competence, Courage, Clarity, Coaching and Character. I’ve read this book before, but what I want to do this time is bring my leaders is apply it to the ministers that serve around me. This book serves as a motivator and a challenger in how we can serve better. I want to serve better.
