I met with a minister (also a good friend) to talk about a ministry position that I’ve been contemplating for a while. When it comes to ministry job descriptions it can sometimes be really easy and sometimes really difficult. Entry roles are really easy to define, it’s the management ones that are difficult. One reason the management roles are difficult to describe is because you are asking someone who is not paid, volunteering their time to take on a role a lot of organizations would stipend or pay. Unfortunately, we aren’t in that position right now. Another reason defining a management role in youth ministry is difficult is because there are not a lot of models to follow. The only examples I can find are in the non-church world, I mostly look at what the corporate world has to offer. I wish there were more examples out there; unfortunately, they are slightly limited and hard to find.
I enjoy the challenge of creating roles, because I feel it makes the ministry a little more attractive. Some people are meant to serve God by simply serving pizza, laughing with teens or leading a messy games. Others can serve through systems, structures, methods and management. As much as I enjoy serving the youth of my parish I feel God is calling me to serve as a mentor and manager to adults who love God and like teens (as I’ve heard some people say, you have to love everyone…. liking is a whole other thing.) As stressed out as I am and as much as I need sleep I am really looking forward to Sunday.
